CONGESTION AT PORT

Waggons And Labour Short

Both labour and railway waggons were in short supply at the congested port of Lyttelton yesterday.

Discharging stopped at 5 p.m. aboard the Van Cloon, Van Spilbergen, Kirribilli, Fijian Trader, and Port Fairy. Vessels finishing to sail, and vessels loading, were not affected.

The Galway, which has been in the stream since Saturday evening, moved into a berth after the departure of the Port Montreal, but the Navua will not be able to berth until today. The Holmlea, Storm, and Kaimai, were idle all day yesterday and the Van Cloon, Van Spilbergen, Kirribilli and Fijian Trader were shortmanned. In some cases, crew gangs reinforced existing labour.

At least 50 more rail waggons were required last evening for normal work to have continued. Several more ships are due this week.
