SCHOOLS’ CRICKET 98 Run Stand Puts St. Bede’s Ahead

St. Bede’s College won a comfortable lead over St. Patrick’s College, Wellington, on the final day of their annual cricket match, being played at Wellington. Accurate bowling by N. Kavanagh and M. Lamming dismissed St: Patrick’s for 88; only K. Giles played the bowling with an assurance. St. Bede’s was in difficulties at the beginning of its innings, losing five wickets for 59, but a partnership of 98 between A. Smith and R. Campbell placed St. Bede’s in a strong position. Scores:—

PAPANUI BEHIND

The two-day cricket match between Papanui High School and Marlborough College, which will finish today, will decide the result of the annual sports tournament between the schools. Papanui batted first and was out for 161 in moderate time. B. Liddell (32) and M. P. Hopkins (28) had a useful third-wicket partnership of 60, but the tail folded up until A. Jamieson, the No. 10, hit six fours in his 25.

U. MacLaine, the opening bowler, took four for 20 and W. Garrod four for 47 with his leg-spinners. Marlborough’s innings was dominated by Garrod, who made a fluent 75 before he was run out. However, Marlborough also collapsed—to N. McEntee’s off-spinners —but a first innings lead was obtained before Marlborough declared at 162 for nine. McEntee took five for 45 and M. P. Hopkins two for 30. Papanui took a lead in the tournament when the girls’ softball team had a deserved win by 23-13. However, the leeway was made up by the well-drilled Marlborough boys’ team, which had little trouble in winning, 15-6.
