MUSICIANS’ BURSARIES
N.Z.B.C. Plan For Players (N.Z. Press Association) WELLINGTON, Mar. 16. To give added impetus to professional musicianship in this country, the New Zealand Broadcasting Corporation is to institute an overseas bursary scheme for its orchestral members. The director-general of Broadcasting (Mr G. H. Stringer) said today, the scheme will comprise two main types of bursary, one, for extended orchestral study, will be open to N.Z.B.C. orchestral players under 25 and will be tenable for up to one year.
After five years’ continuous membership of N.Z.B.C. orchestras, players will be able to apply for special “refresher” bursaries. These, tenable for up to six months, will allow holders to observe and study trends in orchestral playing, to exchange ideas with fellow musicians and to take advanced training.
Mr Stringer said the number of bursaries will vary from year to year and be determined entirely by the number and quality of applicants, and the current playing strength of the orchestras.
