OLD KAURI CHURCH
Associations For Governor (N.Z. Presi Association) HAMILTON, March 16 Half an hour before attending a civic reception at Te Aroha, today, the Gover-nor-General (Sir Bernard Fergusson) and Lady Fergusson paid a brief visit to the Waihou inter-denominational church.
On December 10, 1926, Sir Bernard Fergusson's father. Sir Charles Fergusson, who was Governor-General of New Zealand at the time, officially opened the old Kauri church.
Sir Charles Fergusson's wife noticed that there was no cross on the Altar and offered to present one. Today, Sir Bernard Fergusson and Lady Fergusson walked through the church, saw the cross presented by his mother, and met some of the people who had been at the opening ceremony in 1962.
The church, named St. Marks, was built in 1880, and orginally stood in Te Aroha.
On August 22, 1886, it was dedicated by Bishop Cowie. In 1926 it was moved to make way for a new church, and was shifted to the site of the old Waihou community hall. It was there that it was opened by Sir Charles Fergusson later the same year.
