No Drink, Rules Mayor
(New Zealand Press Association)
WHANGAREI, March 17. The Minister of Lands (Mr Gerard) will have no choice but to drink the Queen’s health in water or some other non-alcoholic beverage when he visits Dargaville on March 25.
At last night’s meeting of the Dargaville Borough Council, the teetotal Mayor (Mr S. S. Green) said that no liquor would be served if he had any say in arrangements for a welcome dinner. Earlier Mr Green had told the council that as the council chambers would not be available for a proper reception to the Minister, the council would combine with the Hobson County Council in arranging a dinner.
“Will it be a ‘wet’ function or a ‘dry’ one?” asked Mr K R. Dreadon.
“While I am Mayor of Dargaville it will be a ‘dry’ show,” Mr Green said.
