Lady Charles In Dashing Win

Lady Charles made amends for her recent defeat in the Timaru Cup when she won the Bryndwr Handicap at Addington Raceway on Saturday. There was considerable merit in her win as she was near the tail of the field racing to the straight. Switched to the outside of the track, she unwound a sizzling burst and won going away.

Lady Charles, which is trained by her New Brighton owner, A. M. Richards, was driven by M. Holmes, who had been successful earlier with Douce and Harbour Light. Lyndhurst broke hopelessly and Sentimental, Bonnieburn and Stormont lost ground at the start. Soanfra and Gold Globe had turns in front before Bobbinet took over just after passing the six furlongs. Bobbinet was clear of Central Range and Smoke Screen racing to the straight, with Gold Globe, Johnny Thunder and Ahumai prominent. Smoke Screen looked likely to cause the upset of the night when he raced clear inside the furlong. However, the field closed on him in the last few yards. In a keen finish Lady Charles, against the outside fence, caught the leaders in the last few yards and beat them by a rapidlyincreasing margin of a length. Sentimental paced his best race for some time when he got up for second, a head in front of Smoke Screen. Johnny Thunder was another head away, a nose in front of Ahumai and Central Range, which dead-heated for fifth. Gay Robin, which looked unlucky, was a length back, ahead of Gold Globe. Soanfra, Bobbinet, and Young Dieman. Bluff Stays On Bluff gained his sixth win for the season when he stayed on too well for his rivals in the Rattray Handicap. G. Holmes had him prominently placed in about sixth position for most of the race and he followed El Adem, Captain Dee, Jilaire and

Johnny Dee into the straight with Maggie Spangler. Mile End and Miriam Hall showing up. Bluff rushed to the front inside the furlong and kept up to his work. He held on to win by half a length from Miriam Hall, which finished determinedly over the final furlong. El Adem, which forced almost all of the pace, battled on gamely for third a neck back, half a length in front of a solid finisher in Mile End. Vivace and Jilaire were right up. ahead of peerswick and Johnny Dean. Aiblins, Flying Alisa, which took no part, Napoleon Hanover and King Clovis lost ground at the start. Trigside broke before the end of two furlongs. Maggie Spangler fell and King Clovis lost his driver with half a furlong to run. At Good Odds Castleton’s Gift gained his fourth win for the season and paid a false dividend of £lO 19s when he beat Minnow and Asia Minor in a keen finish to the Spreydon Handicap. Castleton’s Gift led from end to end. Minnow moved into second place in the middle stages and with the pacemaker drew clear of the others, headed by Asia Minor, which was four lengths behind them at the straight entrance. Castleton's Gift fought back gamely in the straight and won by half a length from Minnow, with a nose to a solid finisher in Asia Minor. Dreaming was beaten off fourth, shading Grand Charge. Glenurquhart, after being one of the tail-enders, gained a fine win in the Fendalton Handicap, a race for probationary drivers. He improved sharply from just inside the half-mile and he took a short lead from Nigger Minstrel early In the run home. He ran on too well and won by a length. Nigger Minstrel held on for second, a head in front of the unlucky Mountain Song, which lost a handy position near the straight entrance. Happy Sam, a slow beginner, was two lengths back fourth, shading Spring Garrison, Maori Falla and Blonde Piper. Decisive Douce earned herself a start in the New Zealand Welcome Stakes on Saturday week when she won the Two-year-old Stakes. Her win brought a welcome change of luck to the West Melton trainer, L. D. Asnburton. A filly by Garrison Hanover from Luronne, she was driven by M. Holmes. Douce trailed Paranova until Inside the last furlong and then challenged. She finished strongly and won by a length and a half. Paranova was unchallenged for second, finishing six lengths in front of Efficient, with three lengths to Golden Oriole. Wilder made up ground for fifth, clear of Lornaway. The favourite bracket of Farlight and King Gypsy was never dangerous, while Snowfall, Wilder, Romantic Chief, Copper Khan (checked), and Kim Marie gave ground.
