Richmond Is Men’s Softball Champion

Richmond won the Distillers’ Cup by defeating Avon, 6-5, in the men’s softball final on Saturday. Richmond won with superior fielding and adequate batting. Avon batted well but was outclassed in the fielding department.

Neither team scored in its first innings but Richmond gained three runs when next It came to the plate. The advantage gave the Richmond pitcher, K. Smith, an opportunity to exploit his marginal strikes, a deciding factor during the game. Avon did not score until the third innings when R. McKenzie hit one of the biggest home runs seen at English Park this year, to score two runs. Avon added another run in the same innings but Richmond regained the lead in the next innings when A. Hall scored his second run. Avon drew level in the sixth innings when McKenzie and Campbell scored, but a good catch by Woods ended the innings with the bases loaded. Woods then scored the winning run for Richmond after a good hit by D Lew.

A. Ballantyne (Avon) won the pitching duel, yielding four hits to Smith’s nine, but Avon’s field errors cost it the match.
