The Slug Picked In Autumn High-Weight

The Wingatui-trained gelding The Slug should be too good for his eight opponents in the Autumn High-weight, a feature race on the first day of the bamaru Jockey Club’s autumn meeting today.

The Slug wan well against stronger opposition in a highweight ait the Wellington Cup meeting at Trenttem in January and has since run two good thirds over hurdles at Wingatui. Tirana and Mighty Smart may provide him with the strongest opposition. Tirana finished well for fourth over 10 furlongs in open company at Motukarara last week and Mighty Smart was fifth in a sprint at Wingatui at his last start. Chances of a Riccanton success in the race will depend on Ashleigh, the top-weight with 9-13, 51ib more than The Slug. Ashleigh has shown good form on occasion, but has not been racing well lately. He could only manage seventh at Motukanara last week. Tirana, which was previously trained at Riiecarton but is now in J. C, McKerrow’s Washdyke stable, will be Canterbury's main hope. Cortrieonzo, the other Washdyke candidate, has no recent form to speak of and Tartmine, from Waimate, was well beaten in the high-weight at Motukarara last week when having his first start after winning a steeplechase at Wingatui last August. Two of the other candidates are from Wingatui and the third—Cluny Bill—comes from Gore. Cluny Bill finished behind The Slug over hurdles at Wingatui the last time he raced and Lostalon came fourth in a high-weight at Wingatui. Neither seems likely to provide the favourite with strong opposition'. Sudd El Nil could be hard to beat if he was at his best

but he did not race well at Cromwell last week-end. Riecarton chances look a lot brighter in the double races, the Papakaio Handicap and the Stewards’ Handicap. Lady York, a five-year-old Riccarton-trained mare which won at Humana at her last Start, is the first choice in the Papakaio Handicap, which is run over 10 furlongs and 138 yards, the same distance as the Autumn High-weight. Champ, a four-year-old, is a firm favourite to win his fifth successive race in the Stewards’ Handicap, the open sprint. There had been no scratchings from the Papakaio Handicap yesterday afternoon, but there were two withdrawals from the Stewards’ Handicap—Deladana and Neron. The weather in Oamaru yesterday was fine, except for a shower at lunch-time, and the track is expected to be in excellent order.
