Full Programme Planned j The Canterbury Junior Chemical Society and the Canterbury branch of the New Zealand Institute of Chemistry both begin their year's programme about now. In addition, the first lecture in the branch’s annual series for sixth-form pupils, "Chemistry In Action,” will be held next week. The Junior Chemical Society had its flrat meeting last evening, when it was addressed by Mr D. J. Higgins, of Kempthorne Prosser iN.Z), Ltd., on fertiliser manufacturing. Other activities during the year will include a field trip to Lincoln College, a visit to the University of Canterbury chemistry dejiartment, and lectures by Dr. D. Adcock and Professor J. Vaughan. The institute's first meeting will be held on Monday, with the branch chairman (Mr R. W. Cauley, of the Wheat Research Institute) giving a talk entitled “Bread.” There will be further lectures throughout the year. Next Monday, March 23. a refresher course organised by the branch, in inorganic chemistry, will be started, with a lecture by Professor Vaughan. The other speakers in the three-lecture series . will be Drs. A. Fischer and D. N. Kirk. The national president, Mr S. G. Brooker, will visit the branch on April 20. The first lecture in the “Chemistry In Action" series will be given on Thursday by Professor R. E. F. Matthews of the University of Auckland. The speakers at the two succeeding lectures will be Professor H. N. Parton, of the University of Otago, and Mr K. E. Seal, of the Amalgamated Brick and Pipe Company, Ltd.. Auckland. A 118-passenger hydrofoil. Comet-2. is now in service on the Black Sea.
