RANDOM REMINDER
THE MORNING AFTER
Yesterday was Friday the Thirteenth and this space should properly have been devoted to some words of warning about the hazards to be avoided during that calamitous occasion. People often like to be reminded about ladders as well as snakes. In fact, the day passed, so far as we were concerned. almost without incident. Sure, there was the usual parking ticket, but that really had nothing to do with it being the thirteenth. We were bawled out, as the saying goes, by the boss, but again, there was
nothing unusual in that. And it wasn't as if this was the first time we’ve been soft-hearted enough to lend money to a stranger. Mind you, it was only the third time this month that we’ve fallen running for the bus. But again, it was nothing to do with it being the thirteenth. The first time was on a Tuesday, then on a Sunday. It might be as well, however, to keep an eye out next Wednesday. The wife burned the dinner. Again. But she's not even superstitious, and she said her attention had been attracted by the water running down the wall-paper
from the leak which developed in the tank. So you can’t blame the charred meal on it being an unlucky day. Of course it added to the confusion when those cousins from Rakaia came in. It wasn’t the lack of food which upset them, they said, but the fact that their visit had been forgotten. And who was to know that the spare bed into which we crept rather shamefacedly had not been properly bolted together? It’s all nonsense, really, about the ladders and things. We don't propose to give it another thought. Not until November, at any rate.
