BUILDING AT AIRPORT

Statement By M.O.W. A suggestion that the Ministry of Works was unable to provide a building at Christchurch Airport for the instrument landing system being stored there was denied by the District Commissioner of Works (Mr D. B. Dallas). “Plans of this building are already practically complete, and it is expected that a contract for construction will be prepared about the end of the month,” Mr Dallas said. “Four buildings of this new standard design are wanted, including requirements for the Auckland airport. “The Ministry of Works Is also awaiting final briefing from the Civil Aviation Administration regarding requirements for housing two radio locator beacons at the airport. These are understood to be definitely essential to the operation of jets. The Civil Aviation Administration has been in consultation with overseas authorities, and is still studying the possibility of using new transistorised equipment for these beacons. “If this can be used,” said Mr Dallas, “it would require much simpler housing than the specially constructed almost air-conditioned concrete buildings that have been used in the past. Whichever way the decision goes, the Ministry of Works could produce plans for the necessary buildings at short notice.” Other building work required at the airport for Civil Aviation Administration requirements was the alteration of two wooden buildings, one to be used as a training school and the other for additional workshop facilities. Mr Dallas said that by arrangement between the Civil Aviation Administration and the Ministry of Works, the City Engineer had already received, through the airport manager, a very detailed briefing on requirements for these alterations. Discussions were now being held with the City Engineer on the quickest arrangement for carrying out the work.
