DETAINEES IN S.A.
Commission Refused (N.Z. Press Assn.—Copyright) CAPE TOWN, March 11. The South African Justice Minister, Mr Vorster, today refused to appoint a commission to investigate alleged ill-treatment of political detainees under the 90-day Detention Act The call for an inquiry was made by an Opposition Senator, Mr R. D. P. Jordan, who asked for a commission similar to the Denning Commission which investigated Britain’s Profumo scandal, the Associated Press reported. Mr Vorster said there was no case for an investigation. Out of 686 persons at present detained only 48 had complained. These complaints had been referred to the South African AttorneyGeneral and only four cases were still pending, he said.
