HORTICULTURAL SHOW
1000 Entries From Schools
Although some entries had been lost through its being a wet morning, there were 1000 entries in the annual show of the Christchurch Boys and Girls’ Horticultural Society, held yesterday, said the secretary (Mr D. L. Wildey). Great enthusiasm had been shown by those competing, and there was much competition, especially in the decorative section. Competition was increased this year because of rivalry between St. Margaret’s College and Rangi-ruru School, which was taking part for the first time, Mr Wildey said. Shell collections, arrangements in miniature containers, some of which were little larger than the head of a match, sand trays, sprays, button-holes, and modelled gardens were included among the 71 classes in the show. Entries in the vegetable section were given to the Red Cross meals-on-wheels service, as in previous years, Mr Wildey said. This section had drawn only a third of the usual number of entries in this year’s show, he added. Judges were: Decorative, Mrs T. E. West; cut flowers and cacti, Mr D. Combridge; vegetables, Mr S. Prebble; collections, Mr J. Fahey. Junior stewards on duty throughout the day were Elizabeth Donald and Macefield, of the Hoon Hay School, and Susan Barron and Edna Miskimmin, of the Linwood Intermediate School. Entries for the show were invited from 65 schools. Although a hard core had supported the show for many years the most disappointing aspect was the general apathy of teachers in many of the schools, said Mr Wildey. The children were carried away with enthusiasm once they entered, but they needed encouragement in the beginning from their teachers.
