Farmer Appointed To Canberra Post
(New Zealand Press Association) WELLINGTON March 9. Mr James Luke Hazlett, a prominent Southland sheep farmer, has been appointed New Zealand High Commissioner in Australia. The appointment was announced by the Prime Minister (Mr Holyoake) tonight.
Mr Hazlett, who is 52, was educated at Waitaki Boys’ High School. He is the youngest son of the late Mr W. T. Hazlett, who was well known in New Zealand and Australia as a successful racehorse owner. Before his recent retire-
ment to Invercargill, Mr Luke Hazlett farmed at Gretna Green, near Winton. During the Second World War he served overseas with
the 20th Armoured Regiment. He was commissioned and later became adjutant of the regiment. Mr Hazlett has played an active part in local and community affairs in Otago and Southland. He is also a member of the Motor Spirits Licensing Authority and the Nature Conservation Council. Mr Hazlett’s wife, the daughter of Mr C. B. Tapley, of Invercargill, has also been prominent in public life.
For some years Mrs Hazlett was Dominion chairman and sponsorship secretary of the Save the Children Fund, and she is currently president of the Southland Omaui holiday camp for children.
