The development of R. Thomas as a forcing batsman has been one of the features of the Sydenham team this season. Against St. Albans Thomas scored a fipe 54 and his aggressive stroke making was in no way curbed by the fact that when he came to the wicket, Sydenham had lost its first two wickets for no runs.

In P. D. Smith, D. W. Stead and R. W. Thomas Riccarton have three of the most promising younger players in Christchurch. Saturday saw the first appearance of yet another talented youngster, C. L. Broad who has come from Westport to attend Lincoln College. Broad, who has played for the Canterbury Rothman’s team is an off spinner and a sound batsman.

For two East Christ-church-Shirley players, the promotion-relega-tion match against Technical Old Boys was a “second.” A. E. Dunlop was taking part in his second grading match in less than

A. E. DUNLOP a year as he was a member of the Sydenham Rugby team that lost to Lincoln College last winter; and B.A. Haworth was the only member of the team that played in EastShirley’s last match against a second grade team: West Old Boys about 10 years ago.

With a further nine wickets against Old Collegians, the WestUniversity off-spin bowler, P. A. Sharp

now heads the senior takers for the season with 55 wickets. This is his first full season in Christchurch and a continuation of this from next season will undoubtedly bring him higher honours.

The spinners had a day out at Elmwood Park on Saturday of the 25 wickets which fell during the day’s play 23 went to spin bowlers. M. G. Lester captured eight, P. A. Sharp seven, A. C. Timpson seven, and B. A. Carpenter one.

Playing his last game for Lancaster Park, P. B. Wight, the Somerset professional was made captain for the match. He must have been particularly happy with Saturday’s play after seeing Riccarton dismissed for 58 and himself scoring 65.

O. Dryland had a successful match for Technical Old Boys in the pro-motion-relegation game against East Shirley. He took five wickets with his flighted leg-spinners and made a slow, but valuable 35 not out when Tchnical Old Boys batted.
