Older Ewes Bring 89s At Amberley

The feature of the Amberley (southern section) ewe fair held yesterday was the strong market for four-year-old ewes, which brought up to 89s a head. These older ewes looked dear in comparison with two-tooths, which made little more than this and frequently not as much.

The two-tooth sale was generally disappointing, values being not much in advance of late market rates, taking quality into account. The best of the five-year-old ewes also sold well at up to 745, but average sorts made more modest values and were about in line with ruling rates.

The continued dry weather was thought to have depressed the market, particularly for two-tooths and some of the average older ewes, but even with a better feed outlook it seems unlikely that the good quality older ewes would have sold much better. In addition to district farms, sheep were purchased for Rangiora, Loburn, Darfleld, Rakaia and as far south at Ashburton.

The entry totalled 19,713, compared with 18,255 last week, and included 7655 twotooth ewes (6218 last year), 11,898 older ewes (11,906), and 150 ewe lambs (131). In spite of recent dry conditions and earlier unseasonable cold and wet conditions, the sheep came forward in good order, and most were well grown and in forward condition. Several men who have been at this sale over a number of years said that the sheep had seldom looked better. Two-tooth Sale

The two-tooth ewe sale was a little erratic. There was a remarkably good early sale of 248 Corriedales from T. G. Maxwell (Glen Gynk) at a handsome £5 13s. These sold under particularly keen competition, but this level of values was hardly sustained immediately afterwards, when very attractive sheep were bringing less than £5. Taking quality into account it seemed that values were not much in advance of late market rates, but in keeping with recent market trends they were about 13s to 16s ahead of last year’s fair. For 16 pens sold yesterday the average was 13s better than for the same vendors’ sheep at Amberley last year. In the later stages of the sale it looked as though buyers were discounting lighter condition and smaller sheep, there being a margin of up to about 30s between adjacent pens. The best of the younger ewes sold from 96s to £5 13s, with good at 89s to 955, average at 78s to 87s, and others at 60s to 775. Apart from the markettopping sheep from Glen Gynk, G. S. Peter (Seaward Downs) and P. I. Inkson (Glenpark), sold 67 and 70 respectively at £5, W. L. and J. L. Doak (Cattle Peaks) and E. L. Hiatt and Son (Limestone Hills) sold 78 and 71 respectively at 975, the Doaks had another 70 at 96s 6d, and Robin Gould (Mount Cass) realised 96s for 113. Older Ewes

The four-year-old ewes were a very good lot, and they met a particularly good sale, a number of sales being made between 70s and 89s and many more between 60s and 70s. For this age group there was a strong note throughout, and the high point of the market was reached in the concluding stages. For eight pens sold yesterday the average level of values was about 16s 3d a head better than for the same sheep last year, and this was probably a fair reflection of' the general improvement of. the market. The pick of the four-year-old ewes realised from 76s to 89s. with good at 68s to 75s and average at 56s to 655. There was a notable sale right at the end of the day for 407 of the well-known Cotswold halfbreds of J. and S. McLean, which all went for 89s. These were big. deeply-woolled sheep. D. C. Gardiner and Son (Dovedale) also had 160 at 85s and 74 at 81s, and R. C. Overton (Raumati) sold 114 at 81s and 115 at 775. Mt. Vulcan, Ltd. also realised 77s for 160 and 76s for 493, and Robin Gould <Mt. Cass) had another 190 at 775. In the five-year-old section the top sheep also commanded excellent prices, the pick making from 60s to 745. but most were making about recent market rates between about 40s and 48s. Nine pens sold in this section of the sale averaged just under 10s a head better than comparable sheep offered a year ago. Good five-year-olds could be

quoted at 50s to 57s with average at 40s to 48s. Top price in this section went to G. A. McLean (Drynie) with 171 halfbreds at 745, and R. C. Overton was to the fore here also with 170 Corriedales at 735. J. and S. McLean also received 69s for 194, and H. Fitzsimmons (Gretavale) sold 141 at 60s. Two pens of Corriedale ewe lambs were not sold at auction. The first was passed in and the other pen was then not put up for sale at auction.
