Watch On Tussock Fire After Crash
(New Zealand Pres* Association)
DUNEDIN, Feb. 16. Teams of volunteers are still keeping a 24kour watch on the fire swept slopes of Monnt Ida, five miles from Mawby, and will continue to do so for several days. About 3000 acres of tussock country were ravaged by fire on Thursday and Friday after the North Otago Aero Club’s Vieta aircraft crashed in a gully on the mountain, killing the pilot, Kelvin WakeHn, the club’s instructor Tonight, the clerk of the Maniototo County Council (Mr L G Ardell) said there were still small outbreaks because heads of tussock
were still burning. “We think it will take another four or five days to control to" It was thought the situation might be eased when rain fell on Saturday evening but Mr Ardell said it appeared to make no difference. Mr Ardell said a 24-hour watch was being kept on the area. So far 300 volunteers had come forward to help and they were being used in teams of between 10 and IS. Work had been hampered by the nature of the country. Utility vehicles could only go so far and the teams then had to walk for an hour and a half to get to the fire area. In addition, relief' foams could only go in in daylight
