Bishop & Spinners Worry St. Albans
At Hagley 3 the ball turned readily from the opening overs •nd the spinners on both sides enjoyed much success. Against the medium-paced bowling, A. T. Bishop and A. R, Mac Gibbon started superbly, reaching 50 in 42 minutes and scoring 78 to•ether. Mac Gibbon’s elegant driving made the day for some of the spectators; it is one of cricket’s finest sights. Bishop also started briskly, but then assumed a more puritan outlook But from 101 for one. Old Collegians slipped to 136 for seven, mainly because of some well-directed leg-spin bowling by J. W. Burtt This was just the situation for J. H. M. Dawson, who took complete charge for 22 dizzy minutes. He commandeered the bowling, made some lusty hits, brought off a cover drive from the Hammond mould, hit five fours and a six and scored 32 of the 33 runs added while he was in; the other was a leg-bye. Swift Progress _' S° was the progress that Old Collegians scored their fourth 50 in 29 minutes, for Bishop, after reaching his halfcentury in 168 minutes, took only 36 more to attain three figures. His driving and cutting. derivatives of quick, sure footwork, were delightful and he reached his century with his sixteenth boundary hit. _ st Albans also started well, J. M. Ruston and J. A. Mills scoring 57 for the first wicket in only 38 minutes, but B. A Carpenter, with off-spin and M G. Lester, with left-ann legspin, soon exerted a hypnotic influence on the batsmen Carpenter, after 20 bails, had three for none and his control of length and direction were entirely admirable. Lester's enticing flight and sharp spin «s° brought rich rewards, and St, Albans barely escaped the embarrassment of following on The umpires are Messrs L. C. Johnston and J.
