Busy Programme For ‘Miss New Zealand, 1963’

TIMARU. February 14. Miss Elaine Miscall, “Miss New Zealand,” 1963, and runner-up in last year’s "Miss World” contest, has no intention of getting married for a while, she said in Timaru today. This year’s "Miss New Zealand” contest will open about the middle of April at Wellington and she will be touring with the 17 finalists. She will have her twentieth birthday on June 1, when “Miss New Zealand,” 1964, is chosen at Dunedin, and she will then be released from her own contract.
Miss Miscall, who arrived from Gisborne this afternoon, presented songs at the Theatre Royal this evening, before eight girls appeared in fashionable day wear in the “Miss South Canterbury” contest.
Assisting her in the judging of the contest, the final of which will take place to-
morrow evening when the girls will parade in evening wear, was Miss Eva Sprott (Christchurch), the South Island travel consultant for TEAL On Saturday night Miss 'Miscall may demonstrate the latest dance craze, the “hitchbiker,” which she was taught i London. It is a variation of the twist, although there •re more arm movements. Miss Miscall will return to Wellington on Sunday
morning. Then she will begin a month’s tour with the New Zealand Wool Board. After that she has a fortnight’s engagement with a paint manufacturing firm, before travelling with the “Miss New Zealand” finalists as a consultant. Jobs Offered She has been offered a position as a travelling consultant for a cosmetics firm; an oil company is interested in securing her services; there is a chance for her to model from Munich to Berlin, and an American promoter is trying to persuade her to return overseas and enter more beauty contests. Entrants in the “Miss South Canterbury” contest, who are being sponsored by business firms, are Misses Sharon McDonald, Jeanette Kent, Judy Ferguson, Freda Peterson, Jaqueline Hillind, Sandra Mitchell, Rosalie Field, and Katherine Gibson (Pleasant Point). The organiser is Mr Eric Johnston, assisted by the South Canterbury Public Relations Officer (Mr A. S. Abernethy).
