THE Kenning Cup final is to be decided at this year’s 103rd annual championships of the National Rifle Association. The cup is awarded to the competitor with the highest aggregate score in the Belt series over three years. This year, the championships will begin on Tuesday, February 25, and conclude with the Queen’s Prize on the Saturday. There is considerable interest in the Kenning Cup because a number of shooters are hot on the heels of the leader, M. C. Petersen (Levin) with 962 points. R. T. Rowley (Invercargill), with 955 points, is next, and A. F. Paynter (Blenheim), R’ A. F. Martin (Karori), F. J. Jeune (Gisborne), M. G. Gordon (Okawa, Hastings), are third equal with 950 points each. Others with prominent scores are lan Ballinger (Sydenham, Christchurch), 949; W. Oakley (Malvern, Canterbury), and T. N. Southerland (Opaki, Masterton), 948 each; J. A. Hand (Petone) and J. T. Petersen (Alfredton, Eketahuna), 947 each.
The unofficial start of the N.R.A. championships is the Wellington title on Monday, February 24. The Wellington event gives the many competitors from other centres a chance to try the range and allows them to get into their best match temperament.
