Marilynn Smith To Play At Waitikiri
THE highlight of the visit to Christchurch by Miss Marilynn Smith, one of the world’s leading women professional golfers, will be an exhibition match at the Waitikiri course against three well-known Canterbury and New Zealand golfing personalities. They are Miss Susan Grigg, the former New Zealand champion; N. H. Fuller, the Christchurch dub professional; and the New Zealand representative, R. C. Murray.
Miss Smith, on a monthlong tour of New Zealand, will arrive in Auckland on February 25 and will be in Christchurch on Tuesday and Wednesday, March 3 and 4. On the Tuesday evening, she will give a lecture and on Wednesday morning will hold a clinic at the Shirley club. The
exhibition match will be played on the Wednesday afternoon.
Miss Smith, who is the managing director of Spalding Women's Golf Promotion, began golf at the age of 12 and now, 23 years later, is one of the leading attractions in the women’s game. In 1946, the year she first competed ,in a tournament, Miss Smith won the Kansas State women’s amateur tournament, a feat she repeated in 1947 and 1948. Since turning professional in 1949, she has competed in tournaments in places ranging from ‘ Naples and St. Petersburg, to Alberquerque.
A former president of the Ladies’ Professional Golf Association, Miss Smith last year won the Titleholders’ Championship and with it the coveted Green Coat of golfing.
