SOIL MOISTURE

The Winchmore irrigation research station reported a soil moisture deficit yesterday of 752 points, compared with 414 points at the same time last year. Mr D. S. Rickard, a principal scientific officer at the station, said yesterday that the main interest in the deficit was now as a comparison with last season. Most Canterbury soils were too shallow for such a high deficit to develop and in general when a deficit of about 300 points had been reached they were about as dry over the top 12 inches as they would become and they Would not dry out any further.
