PURTELL IS HOPEFUL
Last-Ride Win In Stakes (N.Z.P.A.-Reuter —Copyright) MELBOURNE, Feb. 14. The Victorian jockey, J. Purtell, hopes the three-year-old New Zealand-bred filly Our Fun will give him a lastride win in tomorrow’s £5250 Alister Clark Stakes, at Moonee Valley. Purtell will be riding for the last time in Melbourne before leaving Australia to take over as No. 1 retainer for the leading Irish trainer, Vincent O’Brien. “I know three-year-old fillies haven’t a great record in the Alister Clark Stakes, but I have a feeling that Our Fun can pull it. off tomorrow,” Purtell said today. Purtell has won nearly every big race in Victoria. He was successful on Comic Court in 1950 and Chicquita in 1951 in the Clark Stakes. The last three-year-old filly to win the race was Wiggle in 1959. Our Fun is fifth favourite at double figures for the Alister Clark Stakes, but Purtell’s confidence could be shared by a number of racegoers tomorrow and the filly is sure to start at much shorter odds. Purtell thinks the No. 3 barrier position will be a big advantage and that Our Fun is well-handicapped at 51b less than weight-for-age. New Zealand-bred Some-
