Newspaper In Classroom (K.Z.P.A.-Reuter) COPENHAGEN. A daily newspaper is a complete school textbook for sil classes, and should be used by teachers for just that purpose, in the view of two Danish teachers. To help colleagues make pester use of the daily press in classrooms the two teachers Messrs K. Lange and N. Holst, have written a book, entitled “Newspapers in the Classroom.’’ Newspapers, they claim, are the only really up-to-date textbooks, and the only printed matter which can be used in all classes for all subjects. Apart from adding a dash of up-to-date reality to many subjects, constant use of newspapers in class, under the guidance of a teacher, will make the citizen of the future a better, and more critical, newspaper reader. Mathematics lessons can be made brighter and more interesting by, for example, calculating in car prices, average speeds of aircraft on the basis of airline advertisements, or even from figures released on the performances of satellites. Newspaper articles and contributions to letters to the editor columns can go into grammar lessons or social affairs classes. A review of a current film is more interesting to read about and discuss than many subjects, and can be compared with the pupil’s own reactions to the same film or television programme.
