BOXING Leahy Disgruntled With His £250
(New Zealand Press Association) AUCKLAND, February 14. The British middle-weight champion, Mick Leahy, left Auckland by the first available aircraft today, disgruntled at his share of the purse after losing to the New Zealand boxer, Tuna Scanlan, last night.
He took only £240 as toe loser’s share of a 60-40 split of 80 per cent of toe gate after expenses had been deducted.
“Leahy took exactly what had been agreed on before toe fight,” said the acting president of the Auckland Boxing Association (Mr W. Christiansen) today. “The association made £ 150 out of the fight. It had to lay out £2OOO expenses to get that much. I don't know of many businessmen who would be interested in that large an outlay for such a small return.”
Scanlap’s share of the purse was £360. The estimated attendance was 7000, mostly with 5s tickets. The association’s match committee will decide whether to match Scanlan with the Empire champion. Quimo Brennan (West In-
dies) or to invite Leahy back for a match with Earl Nikora. The other alternative is to match Scanlan with Nikora. but attempts to promote toe bout this season have so far fallen through.
