NAVY SEEKS RECRUITS
Officer Visits Chch. • The Royal New Zealand Navy is looking for young men who are healthy, alert, and have the capacity to continue learning Sifter they have left school, said the recruiting officer, Sub-Lieuten-ant K. F. Connew, in Christchurch yesterday. He ex-1 amined four candidates and j accepted two whom he de-1 scribed as “particularly good material.” Sub-Lieutenant Connew was recruiting in Canterbury and has left for the West. Coast where he will conduct examinations at Hokitika. Greymouth and Westport, and speak at a number of schools. He said there would be no more examinations until April and candidates accepted would enter the Navy in May. In recent years there have been so many candidates for the Navy that recruiting targets have had to be set, said Sub - Lieutenant Connew. Young men in the 15 to 25 age group were wanted. The two successful Christchurch candidates were both 16. Both had their School Certificate and left school at the end of last year. One had been accepted as a sick berth attendant and the other would go into the electrical branch. Sub-Lieutenant Connew said he also interviewed three prospective women entrants, but recruiting day for Wrens would be March 31.
