First Tunnel Shot At West Arm Soon
(New Zealand Press Association) INVERCARGILL, February 14. Morrison-Downer-Fletcher, contractors for the West Arm power-house access tunnel, expect to fire the first tunnel shot next week, the project manager, Mr C. B. Jones, announced todav.
The half-mile road to the portal of the access tunnel is nearly finished and the side of the mountain where the portal will be has been cleared of timber and scrub.
There are two camps at West Arm. Men of M.-D.-F. occupy one and men of Burnett Motors, Ltd., the other. Burnetts are building the West Arm-Wilmot Pass section of the road to Deep Cove. Good progress has been made and the road has now reached station 143, 14,300 ft from the lake. It ends at a sheer granite bluff, which is being blasted. - At the Burnett’s camp, the cooks are two women, Mesdames D. Frew, of Ashburton, and S. Hampton, of Timaru.
Work on the M.-D.-F. camp began in dense native bush on January 12. Today 84 men live in huts on the site. The cookhouse was completed in the planned 30 days. A compressor and generator shed is being built and a site is being prepared for a warehouse.
