RUM TUBS DOOMED

Navy’s Hard Decision (Special Crspdt. N.Z.P.A.) LONDON, February 14. With space increasingly at a premium in modern warships because of the development of more and more sophisticated weapons, how and where to store the sailors' food and drink has become a great problem, says "The Times” naval correspondent. One casualty in the fight for space, he” adds, may be the brass-bound rum tub, traditional vessel from which the grog is ladled to ratings in the ship’s company. Already in some submarines rum is stored in a built-in tank, but what is visualised is a plastic container which can be carried in a cardboard box. The empty container would be folded up and the space it occupied would be infinitesimal compared with that of rum casks, which needed space even when empty. So in future rum might be taken to shops in what look very like paper bags.
