1000-Acre Blaze

(From Our Own Reporter) WESTPORT, Feb. 14. Forestry Service workers for the last two days have been combating a fire spread over 1000 acres of scrub and light bush, in the Virgin Flat area, seven miles from Westport on the sea coast. The fire had threatened to spread to a large section of rimu and cut over bush but eight men Anally suppressed it, with the aid of a pump taking water from a nearby dam. At one time they resorted to beating out the flames at . close quarters.
