LIBERALS’ VIEW
In Favour Of Take-over The Liberal Party considered that the Prime Minister (Mr Holyoake), had no right to announce publicly that the Cabinet was to discuss Lord Thomson’s takeover bid for the “Dominion” newspaper, M- A. A. Mackintosh, chairman of the national executive of the Liberal Party, said last evening. “The Liberal view is that if Lord Thomson’s organisation acquires the ‘Dominion’ the change would be like a welcome flow of fresh air in New Zealand journalism,” Mr Mackintosh said.. “Lord Thomson has shown himself to be a true democrat and a loyal supporter of the British Throne. Surely when there has been no complaint against any one of his 144 newspapers in 15 countries, New Zealand would stand to gain much from the new ideas any genius of this man and the news empire he has created. “The Liberal Party feels the Government must cease its sabre-rattling attitude and let there be the true freedom of the press which is so often proclaimed hut never demonstrated.” If the Cabinet prevented the take-over, more harm would be done to thr Government than would ever happen to New Zealand if the takeover was allowed to proceed, Mr Mackintosh said.
