Burnside H.S. Awaits Thousandth Pupil
Growing pains at Burnside High School, reported to the board of governors last evening, will be investigated and the whole future of the school examined. With 999 pupils at the school yesterday, the headmaster (Mr C. Cross) said the assembly hall was overcrowded, another science laboratory was needed, and the board must decide whether or when it would stop further enrolments. The thousandth pupil was expected any day, Mr Cross said. He had forecast a rail of about 1028, but there had been a heavy drain of good fifth-form pupils to attractive jobs. The pressure on accommodation meant that three of the four new classrooms not yet completed had been occupied, the demand for senior science required another laboratory, and the hall, built for 800, was inadequate Pupils’ Can The higher numbers, Mr Cross said, also required stands for another 100 bicycles and there was a growing demand for parking for cars and power-cycles used by pupils. “Should we ask for a heliport while we are about it? 1 * asked the chairman (ProfesM. MacElwee). The board decided that the future of the school should
be reviewed. It was said that the building plan provided no extensions beyond the rooms up and with a roll of 1000. The board must decide whether to hold numbers at this figure or seek the Education Department’s approval for expansion to 1200. There is a new high school site purchased by the Postprimary Schools’ Council not far away in Breens road.
It was reported that filtration plant for the swimming pool, on which parents had done much work, would be operating within 10 days. A Government subsidy of £5OO for the filtration plant has been approved and another grant of £574 received to fence tennis courts. Mrs A. J. Warnock has joined the board as a parents’ representative.
