Full-time Chaplain For St. Andrew’s College

The Rev. W. J. Schrader, inducted as full-time chaplain of St. Andrew’s College yesterday, will take chapel services, teach scripture, and also introduce a “religion and life” course. Besides this, he will be a counsellor for boys, teach English, and coach cross-country running and cricket. In the last week of “barracks” Mr Schrader has joined the college’s Army cadets in mountain exercises, the Air Training Corps in a survival course, and sailed with the Sea Cadets on Lyttelton harbour. For six years he was chaplain to the Hawke’s Bay Regiment.

Mr Schrader attended the Timaru Boys’ High School and then graduated from the University of Otago and Knox Theological College, Dunedin. He represented the university at cross-country running.

Immediately after this he went overseas and taught for some years in secondary modern schools in England. Ordained to the ministry on his return, he was assistant minister of St. Andrew’s Presbyterian Church, Wellington, from 1956 to 1958, and for the last five years has bean minister of St, Mark’s, Palmerston North, a “new life parish” of the Presbyterian Church. In Palmerston North he was a member of the Institute for Educational Research and chairman of the Council for Christian Education. With other ministers there he developed a popular religious programme called “Plain Christianity” on the local radio station. Mr Schrader is a member of the Presbyterian Assembly’s radio and television Committee and represents the assembly on the New Zealand Boy Scouts’ Advisory Committee.

The induction service in the St: Andrew’s College memorial chapel was conducted by the Rev. R. M. Rogers, moderator of the Christchurch Presbytery, which was fully represented. The charge was igiven by the Very Rev. M. W. Wilson, until recently part-time chaplain of the college. Lessons were read by prefects.

Child Hurt.— An infant, Nigel James Smith, of 72 Floetan street, was injured when hit by a car outside his home yesterday morning. He was admitted to the Christchurch Hospital where his condition last evening was reported to be fairly satisfactory.
