ARDUOUS TRIP

N.Z. Expedition To Ballenys (N.Z. Press Association) WELLINGTON, Feb. 13. A group of New Zealand scientists will undertake one of the most hazardous tasks yet carried out in the Antarctic when a reconnaissance party visits the Balleny Islands early next month. The Balleny group, three large and two small islands, is about 800 miles north-cast of Scott Base.

The New Zealand party will attempt to land on the islands from the United States icebreaker. Glacier, early in Marell. The party will be led by Dr. T. Hatherton, of Wellington. The islands are thickly covered with ice and the coastal cliffs are up to 1000 ft high.

The Glacier will cruise around the islands for several days and the party will land whenever possible. Two or three groups have previously landed on the islands, but visits have been restricted to the time it took to gaitfier any available rocks. The expedition will include scientists, biologists and geologists. Efforts will be made to scale the cliff faces, and if the weather is satisfactory helicopter landings will be made. If conditions on the islands are suitable the group may attempt to stay for a period on the islands.
