CARGO WORK ECONOMIES
Fruit Handling Commended (N.Z. Press Association) HASTINGS. Feb. 13. “The provision of efficient and economic shipping is essential for the maintenance of our economy, but it means more to the New Zealand fruitgrower than to most other people,” said the chairman of the Apple and Pear Board, Mr J. H. Parker, this morning. He said the fruitgrower paid about a third of the net overseas realisations in shipping costs. It was good to see the streamlining committee’s report covered possible economies in discharging and loading ships to keep them at their true function of carrying goods. The report noted the board had “taken steps to present its cargoes in a manner which enables it to be handled efficiently and quickly, thereby speeding the turn-round of ships carrying fruit.” “We appreciate this recognition of the industry’s work and will continue our efforts,” said Mr Parker. Over the last few days the chairmen of the ' producer boards had conferred with the streamlining committee and heads of the shipping companies, and had agreed on the procedure to get the main recommendations under way.
