CHICAGO, February 13. A 10-year-old girl yesterday gave birth to a 51b 15oz girl. Her doctor, Dr. Carlo Fioretti, said the birth was by Caesarean section. “The baby is in perfect condition. You might say, though, that she’s of unusually large size considering the circumstances,” he added. The mother is a fourth grade school pupil. She will not see her baby,
who will be sent to an orphanage as soon as possible. The mother, a Negro girl, suffering from anaemia, iron deficiency and an infection, was admitted to the hospital on January 18. She was given blood transfusions to strengthen her for ■childbirth. Doctors said she spent her time in her hospital room alternately playing with cutout dolls and crying with worry about what would happen to the baby. A school teacher first noticed the girl was pregnant. “When I told her she was going to have a baby, she asked ‘A real one?’,” a doctor said. A hospital spokesman said a 16-year-old boy was the father. The boy is the son of a foster family with whom the girl had been living. He is having psychiatric tests and a report on him will be given to a juvenile court on March 10. Only 18 births to mothers of 10 years or younger have been reported in the United States. Chicago's health commissioner, Dr. Samuel Andeknan, said earlier this month, when the imminent birth of the baby was reported, that the mother would be the youngest in city records. A nine-year-old Arkansas girl is believed to have been the youngest mother in the United States. She gave birth to a 21b Boz boy in 1957. A five-year-old girl was delivered of a son by Cpsearean section in Peru in 1939.
