Chairman Of Olympic Committee Suppressed

(N.Z.P.A.-Reuter—Copyright)

JOHANNESBURG February 13. The South African Minister of Justice, Mr Vorster, yesterday banned Mr John Harris, chairman of the Non-Racial Olympic Committee, under the Suppression of Communism Act. The order, signed on January 23, was issued yesterday four days before a mass meeting on “Sport and race,” which was planned for Sunday. Mr Harris was to have been the main speaker. Under the order, Mr Harris is restricted to Johannesburg and to 800-

depoort—about 10 miles from Johannesburg. He has to report to the police at Roodepoort every Monday. One of the banning clauses prohibits him from attending or joining meetings or belonging to an organisation which criticises, defends, or discusses the policy of the Government or State. This will mean that he will have to resign from the Non-Racial Olympic Committee. Mr Harris, a teacher at a Johannesburg commercial college, will be able to continue his work.
