Test Pile Today J

The first test pile on the site of the new Bank of New Zealand on the corner of Hereford street and Colombo street will be driven today. From the resulting tests, piles will be cast ready for driving in about two weeks. A contract for the new building has now been entered into by the bank and P. Graham and Son, Ltd., the company which built the bank extensions in the Square before work was stopped late last year.

Because of the time lag, Wilkins and Davies Construction, Ltd., are working in conjunction with the main contractors for the pile driving. The revised plans are for an 11-storeyed building with the Colombo street frontage set back 7ft from the old building line. A shopping arcade will be provided on the ground floor, and the main banking chambers will be above.
