SHARK SEEN IN HARBOUR

Sighting By Oarsmen

(N.Z. Press Association) WELLINGTON, Feb. 12. A shark almost collided with a rowing shell about 100 yards offshore in Oriental Bay at 6.30 tonight. The shark was swimming just below the surface when the coxed four skimmed above it.

“It was dark grey and about 10 feet long,” one of the rowers said later. He was sure it was a shark, and not a porpoise or dolphin. Other crew members agreed with him.

Professor L. R. Richardson, of Victoria University’s zoology department was taken on a flight up the northern beaches this afternoon. He said later he had seen five different species of shark between Pukerua Bay and Raumati.' “Some of them were swimming alone close to the surface, ’• he said. “Others were scattered in groups of two, three, five and up to eight or nine.”

He was not able to identify positively the species or to say whether they . were dangerous.
