Conduct Of Hotels
Sir, —The Mayor of Lyttelton in a borough council discussion - seemed to infer there was .no after-hour trading in hotels at Lyttelton. He is either ignorant or not aware of what is happening at the port. Young boys are much the worse for drink, and reports of the Magistrate’s Court, show that some hotels have not been confined. to regular hours. Seaman boys, well under 21 years, can be seen under the influence of drink. —Yours, etc., IN INTEREST OF YOUTH. January 24, 1964. [The officer in charge of the Christchurch Police District (Chief Superintendent G.' C. Urquhart) said: “The hotels at. Lyttelton are regularly policed during trading hours and after hours with a view to - detecting breaches of the Sale of Liquor Act.' There have been recent prosecutions of licensees there. A serious view is taken of the supply’ of liquor to minors and particular attention is paid to this aspect by the police. If the correspondent has any evidence of breaches of the act I would be pleased if he or she would communicate with the Lyttelton police. We often find that persons over the age of 21' years do unfortunately purchase liquor for minors who are attending parties, etc.”] ■
