“Another Country” Sent To Tribunal
(New Zealand Press Association} WELLINGTON, February 12. The novel, “Another Country,” by an American Negro writer, James Baldwin, is the first book to be officially submitted to the Indecent Publications Tribunal. It has been submitted by the Justice Department.
Public notification was' given by the Secretary of Justice (Dr. J. L. Robson) today that he had applied to the tribunal for a decision as to whether the book, published by Michael Joseph, of London, was indecent or not, or for a decision as to its classification. A Justice Department official said tonight that the date of the hearing would probably be fixed by the chairman of the tribunal (Sir Kenneth Gibson) next week.
The hearing was almost certain to be held in Welling“The first cases which go before the tribunal will be important because we want to know the tribunal’s views ” he said. At the end of last year it was announced by the department that four unnamed books would be formally submitted to the new tribunal. Eight rther books, including Nabokov’s “Lolita ” would be submitted informally by the department for the information of members of the tribunal.
