Police Blamed For Injuries (NX Preu Association) AUCKLAND, January 24. Mr A. A. Coates. S.M., today ordered a Police Department inquiry into the way in which Francis Daniel Sloane, who appeared before him charged wrth drunkenness, received grazes to his face. Sloane, a 48-year-old upholsterer, alleged when asked how he had received his injuries, that he “got them from the police.” He pleaded not guilty to the charge of drunkenness The Magistrate stood the case down until this afternoon. when Sergeant E. E. Stacey said he had made a preliminary inquiry. It appeared that Sloane had stumbled when leaving the police van on being taken to the central police station, and had fallen forward on to his face. Sloane asked the Magistrate for permission to speak, then said: “That is not true.” He said he had a number of witnesses, whom he had not yet been able to locate. The Magistrate adjourned the hearing for a week to enable the inquiry to be made and for Sloane to obtain his witnesses.
