WARSHIP’S FIRE
Suggestion Of Sabotage (N.Z.P.A.-Reuter—Copyright) LONDON, January 24. Fire aboard the 23,000-ton British aircraft carrier Hermes last week, which put two diesel generators out of action, is now thought “to have been possibly caused by a deliberate act," the Admiralty said today. Admiralty police are helping the ship’s officers with inquiries into the fire’s cause. The Admiralty said the fire broke out in the diesel generating room while the Hermes was in Portsmouth dockyard on January 18, and two generators were put out of action. But this did not prevent the Hermes from sailing later in the day for exercises. The Admiralty spokesman said: “At first the fire was attributed to an electrical fault but it is now thought to have been possibly caused by a deliberate act. Inquiries are continuing.**
