RECOVERY OF TRACTOR
Salvage Work In Antarctic
The cargo ship, U.SNS. Merrell, went fishing in Mc-Mu-do Sound yesterday and dragged up from 24ft of icy water a 33-ton tractor. The Merrell swung its cargo boom over the side to retrieve the huge tractor from the water where it sank last Sunday after breaking through the ice. Two Navy construction men were in the cab when the ice broke, but they scrambled through a hatch in the roof and swam to the ice edge. The Americans believe they can get the tractor into working order again.
