Lower At Close (N.Z. Press Assn.—Copyright) NEW YORK, Jan. 16. The New York stock market closed a little lower in heavy trading today, the Associated Press of America reported. The market was mixed at the start, rose moderately in mid-afternoon, but declined slightly in the final hour. The ticker tape was late at the close. Most losses ranged from fractions to around one dollar a share, but a few were bigger. Stock Index Standard and Poor’s broadly-based 500 stock index fell a modest nine cents at 76.55 dollars. It declined after setting nine new high levels in the last 11 sessions. The S. and P. 425 industrials fell 12 cents at 80.94 dollars. The Dow Jones 30 industrials rose 1.42 to 776.13—0n1y .42 from their all-time high level set one week ago. Good gains in several blue chips sent the Dow Jones index 30 higher. The autos, steels, and electrical equipments declined. Utilities and selected issues closed higher. Other major groups were mixed. There were 554 declines and 531 advances. The volume totalled 6,200,000 shares, compared with 6,750,000 shares traded yesterday.
