APPOINTMENT IN PALESTINE

Major J. L. Knowles With ILN. Major J. L. Knowles, of tlie New Zealand Regiment, left Wellington by air on Tuesday to take up his second appointment as military observer with the United Nations truce supervision organisation in Palestine. Major Knowles, who was; born in Timaru, is a son of. Mrs I. G. Knowles, of Gres-* ford street, Christchurch. He began his career with tho, National Bank of New Zea-* land. He joined the Terri-:, torial Force in 1938, and was. commissioned in 1939, before the war. Returning to New ZealandaPer his war service, he war accepted as a Regular in 1949. He has latterly beendistrict recruiting officer anrf. public relations officer for the Central Military District.He has become well known as the president of the Wei-li-.gton branch of the United. Nations Association of New Zealand. He has served » two-year term as a church, warden for the Anglican. Church, and also two periods; as a district commissioner for the Boy Scouts’ Association. He is also a member of the Wellington Commercial Tra--vellers’ and Warehousemen «■ Association, the Public Relations Institute of New Zea-< land, and the Wellington branch of the Lions Club. - His wife and two daugh-. ters sailed in the Southern; Cross on Saturday for a visit to South Africa before join-, ing him in Palestine.
