LAND LEASE TENURE
Uniformity Sought (From Our Own Reporter) TIMARU, January 14. A developing Mackenzie County was “not very happy” with the various terms of leases and the outlook of different organisations such as county councils, university colleges, and harbour boards regarding endowment leases, said the secretary of the Mackenzie branch of Federated Farmers (Mr D. M. France), reporting on today's meeting of the branch at Pukaki. Such leases ran for 11 to 21 years, whereas Crown land leases ran for 33 years, giving security of tenure. “We want all these endowment leases to be under Crown Land administration,” he said. The respective bodies were not being asked to forgo revenue, but administrative control by the Crown was desirable. "We have decided that we will go further with this and submit our representations to the member of Parliament for the district and the Director-General of Lands,” said Mr France. Mr J. I. Innes, the president of the branch, said that some runs had half their land administered by universities and half by the Crown.
