Firemen’s Dispute Proposal For Talks On Settlement Basis
(New Zealand Press Association)
WELLINGTON, January 14. The assistant Secretary of Labour (Mr 11. Parsonage) said today that he would hold separate discussions with both parties in the fire brigades’ dispute in an endeavour to reach some basis for a settlement.
Unless some basis for agreement is reached, firemen in the main centres are expected to refuse routine duties in support of Auckland firemen who are on the same form of limited cease-work. Mr Parsonage said that to avoid this national breakdown he intended to place certain facts before the parties. “I intend to follow up certain ideas and to hold further independent discussions with both parties,” he said. The secretary of the Fire Brigade Unions’ Federation
(Mr T. M. Hill) yesterday wrote to the Minister of Labour (Mr Shand) seeking a form of independent tribunal to which disputes could be referred and quickly settled in the event of failure to reach local settlement.
