YACHTING Cornwell Cup Lead Held By Auckland

(New Zealand Press Association) WELLINGTON, January 14. The Cornwell Cup yacht races at Muritai today went to Auckland and Otago, and gave Auckland the lead from the first-day winner, Paremata, in the points table. In the morning slight winds made the going slow, but in the afternoon a brisk westerly produced an exciting race.

Auckland took the lead from the first stage in the morning race and never lost it. Tauranga took up second place and although it slowly whittled down Auckland’s lead, it was never close enough to trouble the winner, which was 2Jmin clear. The afternoon race was far more lively. Tauranga, Timaru, Otago, and Paremaita were first away from the gun, closely followed by Lyttelton. Wellington was recalled for a false start and lost valuable ground.

When they settled down Otago had the lead with Lyttelton second, then Titahi Bay, Tauranga and Wellington. As the yachts turned for the leeward stage, Otago had a 40second lead on Tauranga, with about tain 20sec back to Lyttelton. Otago sailed at peak standard and constantly made ground against the wind. Behind by Imin ssec as it tunned for the second-last lap of the last triangle, Tauranga hauled out spinnakers and met By the time the kite was flying properly Otago was well on the way to the last buoy before the home run. Auckland and Titahi Bay had a close and exciting battle for third place, Auckland bluffing the other crew into a false move to take the honours. Official placings: Morning race: Auckland (Taboo), 1;.
