Grass fires this summer have burned over 8000 square miles—an area about the size of Wales—on the Nullarbor Plains. In Western Australia, bush fires which have been raging on several stations south of Carnarvon, 600 miles north or Perth, since Thursday yesterday forced a number of families to evacuate their homes. A cold change spread across Victoria late yesterday, bringing hope of some respite from the acute fire danger. Yesterday there were 100 scrub and bush fires.
