ANTARCTIC RESEARCH

Australian Trek Ends

(N.Z. Press Assn.—Copyright) CANBERRA, Jan. 14.

Six Australians last Wednesday ended a 700-mile tractor journey over the Antarctic plateau from their research station at Wilkes.

Their journey began three months and a half ago. Temperatures were below zero on 85 days, one being 48 degrees below’ zero. The explorers encountered rough, hard, wind-rutted snow which caused heavy damage to vehicles and slowed down the convoy. They grappled with slushy snow and swift streams of melted ice when they approached the coast. They abandoned their heavy tractors until cooler weather solidified the ice. Mr Richard Saxton, officer-in-charge of Wilkes station, led the explorers, who recorded glaciological and seismic measurements.
